NHS Lothian Selects TrakCare To Improve Patient Care And Free Up Staff

NHS Lothian the second-largest health board in Scotland and home of the world renowned Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh has a reputation for leadership in its pursuit of world-class patient care.

So when NHS Lothian went in search of a healthcare information system that would usher in a new era in patient-centred care, they were not content with traditional approaches.

The decision to go with TrakCare was led by clinicians who wanted a system up and running quickly so that patients could begin to see benefits immediately. They also demanded a system flexible enough to work the way they do, that provides real-time, comprehensive information on patients, regardless of where care is provided.

The decision to go with TrakCare was augmented by the software's proven track record. TrakCare's Accident & Emergency module has been in place since 2002, demonstrating the low support requirements, reliability and performance that have become hallmarks of TrakCare.

The current implementation of TrakCare including patient administration, radiology and order communications will replace ageing, separate and largely incompatible systems currently in place, enabling clinicians and staff to gain swift access to patient information, with the ability to electronically share this information across NHS Lothian.

Benefits to patient and staff include:

  • Increased clinical staff time spent on direct patient care and less time chasing paper-based investigation results
  • Improved processing and accessibility of laboratory and radiology investigation requests
  • Improved communication of patient information across care providers (including GPs)
  • Improved bed management, ensuring optimal patient care

The TrakCare system integrates third party laboratory software and a national PACS system, for rapid access to results. Integration with the Scottish Care Index enables discharge letters to be sent electronically to GPs, creating the backbone for an electronic record.
